Art parallels History in its reflective qualities. Both Art and History are vital to our understanding of ourselves and are paramount in shaping humanity's perception of its ideals, its dreams, and its future. The primary role of the artist is that of an observer and gatherer of information. The contemporary artist amasses a vast reservoir of ideas, images, and historic context from which he or she then assemble a reflection of reality which encompasses the broader themes of humanity itself as both a celebration and critic of the world in which we live. It is the ambition of the contemporary artist to simultaneously be societies philosopher, scribe, analyst, and medium.
Art allows the artist to represent the changing realities of the human experience. It is the artist's responsibility to have both the tightest grip on reality and the loosest, creating a dichotomy of personality traits which are borne out by the ever changing styles and influences embodied in my work. The core of a contemporary artist's oeuvre can exist much as that of a classical artist over the centuries: with specific focus and skill attained through varied subject matter in one stylistic format. However, I find greater meaning in my artwork when I allow seemingly incongruent forms and stylistic patterns to evolve through a 'sampling' of media in all forms. Similar to the concept in music of sampling sounds and beats, my artwork represents itself to the observer by melding forms which range in historic context, though largely modern, as reflections on historical progression to permit a story-line of iconic and universal development of the individual in society.
